SmithPhoto16, 1890s cabinet card by Biddle and Dowdall of East Dulwich, London
Portrait of a small boy wearing a shirt with an oversized collar and tendency to come untucked. The shirt is a coloured fabric, but the cuffs on the jacket are white. There is a gap between the short trouser and the sock. Overall the impression is that he is wearing a hand-me-down and slightly too small suit with a different shirt to that originally intended to go with it. Some photographers had formal children's clothes available for sittings so its possible it is borrowed. He grasps the top of a child-sized chair to his left and on the other side is a heavily carved table. He has been given a ball to hold.
