Leach16, Late 1880s cabinet card by Elizabeth Horrobine of Morecambe
Lovely family portrait of parents with their small children taken at Morecambe. Likely to be a holiday photo, the older boy wears a dress with lace collage and a stripy hat with a tassel. The younger child has a slightly ghostly appearance due to some movement. The mother has decided to smile but the result shows how difficult it was to maintain a natural expression for a long exposure. The father is smiling too, but his moustache helps to prevent it looking so false. To add to the holiday the mother is wearing a lucky horseshoe brooch and a fashionable flat hat with high trimmings, although her dress is winter weight fabric. Father wears a suit with turn-ups, wing collar and tie and watch chain. His hat is comically small and pushed back on his head.
